FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY
…..Empowering Kenyan communities to achieve food and nutrition security in a sustainable way and with social dignity is one of the key missions of Necofa (Network for Ecofarming in Africa, community-based NGO). Household food security requires that a household has access to enough quality and culturally acceptable food for all people in the home throughout the year. The right to quality food is a human right.
While many Kenyan families are struggling with challenges of poverty, food and nutrition insecurity, families affected by HIV/AIDS are more prone and vulnerable. They are faced with extra responsibility of taking care and feeding the infected person(s) who also require even more nutritional attention. Malnutrition and HIV/AIDS are synergetic and together create vicious cycle that additively weakens the immune system.
Necofa and Slow Food Central Rift Convivium thus decided to conduct a survey in Molo district to better understand the food and nutrition security situation of families affected by HIV/AIDS, and identify ways to improve their current situation……read more
REPORT ON FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY INTERVENTIONS FOR PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV/AIDS
In most of Kenya, the impact of the HIV and AIDS pandemic has eroded the asset base of rural households, depleted their labour force, and restricted their ability to earn cash from farming and non-farm activities. This has had adverse effect on the households’ abilities to feed themselves and maintain adequate levels of nutrition.
Based on survey findings and report conducted in Molo district , Necofa found it important to pilot intervention for families affected by Hiv/Aids. This initiative was “launched” with support given by Pascale (team leader of survey) and early this year it was supported by Ugo Vallauri and Alexander Lowry. The interventions are “tailored made” depending on social-economic situation of beneficiary to ensure that the families acquired nutritious food both for themselves and where possible for sale.Activities so far include establishment of home gardens for food diversification by use of local food resources, establishment of fresh assorted vegetables and fruits selling business (kiosk) and rearing of rabbits and chicken. Necofa has been granted opportunity by GlobalGiving Community to raise funds for project on “Aid livelihoods for 90 HIV affected Kenyan homes” http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/aid-livelihoods-for-90-hiv-affected-kenyan-homes/ with strong possibility of becoming their permanent member if we are able to raise US dollars 4000 from at least 50 people between 25th March and 26th April 2010.

ENVIRONMENT AND BIODIVERSITY
…………………………….The current conditions are causing suffering in the region, as communities depend on the scarce and mismanaged resources lack clean and sufficient water essential for their day to day survival. The communities’ main sources of livelihood in this region are livestock keeping and agriculture, which both depend heavily on water availability. An example of how the current harsh conditions is causing suffering can be witnessed in a number of case studies conducted by the survey team along the sub-catchments which give pictures of the current drought that has hit the region, gradually increasing along the Molo River from the upper catchment to the lower catchment.
